about

The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra was established in 1995, with the goal of presenting the great works of jazz by the best American composers. This includes those creating works in the present, as well as the revered composers of the past. Additionally, the SRJO regularly invites the foremost jazz artists to share the stage as special guests. Among these have been eleven National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters, including the legendary saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jimmy Heath.

In June 2001, SRJO audiences were treated to a pair of concerts in Seattle and in nearby Kirkland featuring Jimmy, at which he directed and played with the SRJO on many of his best know works written for the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson and others. Following the triumphant concerts, the SRJO decided to commission a new work from Jimmy (with a grant from Meet the Composer), resulting in the exciting suite introduced on this recording.

The premier of The Endless Search Suite took place in concert with the SRJO on November 4, 2006, at Seattle's Benaroya Music Hall. The new suite, in three movements, met with critical and audience acclaim, and has been performed by the SRJO on three occasions following the premiere. Jimmy returned to Seattle in December 2007 to go into the studio with the SRJO to make a formal recording of the suite.

ADDITIONAL SELECTIONS ON THIS CD:

"Sleeves" was written by Jimmy Heath in 1984, and is based on a reharmonization of "Autumn Leaves."

Passage Noir was created by Michael Brockman during two separate residencies in Paris.

"Haitian Fight Song" was composed by Charles Mingus and recorded on the 1957 album The Clown. This arrangement by Sy Johnson was recorded in 1999 by the Mingus Big Band.

"Creole Love Call" is one of the great classics created in 1927 just prior to the Ellington band's residency at the Cotton Club.
